Dr. Kristin Tjornehoj, professor of music at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls is the director of the Symphony Band. Some of the finest performers on campus belong to this audition-only ensemble. The ensemble links audiences and members with composers of historically significant eras and composers of today.
Numerous premiers and commissions have taken place under the direction of Dr. Tjornehoj by the Symphony Band. This year a premier by Gregory Fritz will be on the October 18 concert entitled KRISTINMARK. In April, the 43rd commissioned composer will be Michael Colgrass who is writing a work for the Symphony Band. Future commissions include Daniel Kallman, Juri Filas and Andy Boysen, Jr.
The Symphony Band tours annually. This spring the group will tour Spain and perform in Barcelona and Valencia. Previous tours include China, Czech Republic, England, France, and Iceland plus numerous domestic destinations. This ensemble performs at state and national conferences, conventions and tours annually. This fall the band will tour Wisconsin and Illinois, November 19 – 22. The Spain trip dates are set as May 17 – 25, 2009.
